Aspect Ratio Test

16:9 (1.78:1) is the dominant standard for consumer monitors, laptops, and TVs. It covers most Full HD (1920×1080), QHD (2560×1440), and 4K (3840×2160) displays. 21:9 (typically 2560×1080 or 3440×1440) is the standard ultrawide format, popular for gaming and productivity multitasking. 32:9 (5120×1440 or 3840×1080) is the super ultrawide format, equivalent to two 16:9 monitors side by side. 16:10 (1920×1200 or 2560×1600) is common in professional workstation monitors and MacBooks, offering slightly more vertical space than 16:9. 4:3 (1400×1050, 1600×1200) was the standard before widescreen became dominant and remains in legacy business and industrial monitors. 5:4 (1280×1024) was common in older square LCD monitors.

Image stretching occurs when content designed for one aspect ratio is displayed on a monitor with a different aspect ratio without letterboxing or pillarboxing. Common causes: a 4:3 game running in a 16:9 monitor without aspect ratio correction (appears stretched horizontally), a video recorded at 16:9 displayed in 4:3 mode (appears compressed), or incorrect display scaling settings. Fixes: in your monitor's OSD, look for "Aspect Ratio" or "Display Mode" settings — set it to "Aspect Ratio" (not "Full" or "Stretch"). In games, check the game's display settings for "Aspect Ratio Correction." For Windows, check Display Settings → Scale and ensure the resolution matches your monitor's native resolution. For video players, look for aspect ratio settings.

Overscan is a setting (originally from CRT TV technology) that zooms in slightly on the image, cutting off a few percent of the outer edge on all sides. On modern monitors, overscan can be accidentally enabled by connecting via HDMI, causing the desktop to appear slightly cropped and the aspect ratio geometry tests to show stretched circles. To disable overscan: on AMD GPUs, open Radeon Settings → Display → enable "GPU Scaling" and set "Scaling Mode" to "Preserve aspect ratio." On NVIDIA, open NVIDIA Control Panel → Display → Adjust desktop size and position → select "No Scaling." You can also disable overscan in your TV/monitor's OSD under "Image Size," "Scan," or "Just Scan" settings. 21:9 ultrawide monitors come in two main resolutions: 2560×1080 (UWFHD) and 3440×1440 (UWQHD). The 3440×1440 format is more popular for its better pixel density. 21:9 monitors are well-suited for multitasking, creative work, and gaming. In games, the wider field of view in 21:9 provides a competitive advantage in some titles and a more cinematic experience. However, not all games support 21:9 natively; some show black bars on the sides or stretch the image, which the aspect ratio test can reveal. Movies are typically filmed at 2.39:1 (approximately 21:9), so films display without horizontal black bars on a 21:9 monitor. The main drawbacks are that 21:9 requires a wider desk, the curved panels common in 21:9 monitors have a learning curve, and some productivity software does not take full advantage of the extra width.

When 4:3 content (older games, legacy video, older applications) is displayed on a 16:9 monitor, it must be scaled. The correct behavior is pillarboxing — vertical black bars appear on the left and right of the 4:3 image, maintaining the original geometry. Some games and applications offer "stretch to fullscreen" options that stretch the 4:3 image to fill 16:9, which distorts circles into ovals and makes characters appear wider than intended. Many retro game players prefer maintaining 4:3 aspect ratio to preserve original aesthetics. To force correct aspect ratio on older games: check the game's resolution settings for 4:3 options, or use a wrapper like DxWnd. For video, media players like VLC have aspect ratio settings.

The best aspect ratio for gaming depends on the genre and personal preference. 16:9 is universal — virtually all games support it natively, and it offers no compatibility issues. 21:9 offers a wider field of view in first-person and racing games, which can be both visually impressive and competitively advantageous in some scenarios. However, some competitive games like Valorant and CS:GO either do not support 21:9 or black-bar the content to prevent a FOV advantage. 4:3 is preferred by some Counter-Strike players because it reduces the width of hitboxes in the stretched mode, though this is debated and most major tournaments ban stretched resolutions. For console gaming on a TV, 16:9 is standard and 21:9 support is limited. For PC gaming with flexibility, 16:9 or 21:9 are the most practical choices.
