Nintendo Switch Controller Test

Joy-Cons are the detachable controllers that come with every Nintendo Switch. They can be used individually (one in each hand), paired together as a single controller, or attached to the Switch console. The Switch Pro Controller is a traditional gamepad with a larger, more ergonomic form factor, longer battery life (40 hours vs ~20 hours), better analog sticks, and a conventional dual-stick layout. The Pro Controller has an additional capture/screenshot button. Both use Bluetooth connectivity.

Joy-Con drift is the most well-known Nintendo Switch issue. It occurs due to wear on the analog stick potentiometers or debris buildup under the stick mechanism. Nintendo has acknowledged the issue and offered free repairs. In this tester, drift appears as the stick dot moving away from center when you release the stick. The "DRIFT" warning lights up when the stick magnitude exceeds your deadzone setting. Common fixes include applying compressed air under the stick, recalibrating in Switch settings, or requesting a free Nintendo repair.

Yes, Switch Pro Controllers and Joy-Cons work on PC via Bluetooth or USB (Pro Controller only). Pair via Bluetooth in Windows Settings, or connect the Pro Controller with a USB-C cable. The browser Gamepad API will detect them. However, button mapping may differ from the "standard" Xbox mapping — buttons may be in unexpected indices. Steam has enhanced Switch controller support if you need games to recognize the buttons correctly. Some features like HD Rumble are not accessible via the Gamepad API.

Nintendo uses A/B/X/Y labels but in a different physical layout than Xbox. On Nintendo controllers, A is on the right, B is on the bottom, X is on the top, and Y is on the left — this is actually closer to the original Super Nintendo layout. Xbox has A at bottom, B at right, X at left, Y at top. This means when Nintendo games say "Press A to confirm," the physical button is on the right, while on Xbox the confirm button (also labeled A) is at the bottom. The Gamepad API uses index numbers (0–3 for face buttons) which map to physical position, so the labels shown here reflect the Nintendo layout.

Hold the pairing button on the top edge of the Pro Controller (between the USB-C port and L shoulder button) for 3 seconds until the indicator lights start blinking. On your PC, go to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Add device → Bluetooth, and select "Pro Controller" from the list. Once paired, open this page and press any button to activate the controller. Note: Windows may require the controller to be re-paired after connecting it back to a Switch dock, as pairing is typically one device at a time.

A single Joy-Con (L or R) has fewer buttons than a Pro Controller. The Left Joy-Con has: analog stick, L and ZL shoulder buttons, D-pad (four directions), screenshot/capture button, minus (−) button, and two SR/SL buttons on the rail. The Right Joy-Con has: analog stick, R and ZR shoulder buttons, A/B/X/Y face buttons, home button, plus (+) button, and two SR/SL buttons. When used individually, the Joy-Con is rotated sideways and some buttons change function. This tester will show fewer detected buttons when a single Joy-Con is connected.
