PS5-Controller-Test (DualSense)

What is a PS5 Controller Test?

A PS5 controller test is a browser-based diagnostic tool that checks your DualSense controller's inputs in real time—buttons, analog sticks, triggers, and stick drift—without requiring a PS5 console or any software installation. Connect your DualSense to a PC or Mac via USB or Bluetooth, and our tester reads all inputs using the browser's Gamepad API. Note that DualSense-exclusive features like adaptive trigger resistance and haptic feedback require the PS5 console or native apps and cannot be tested in a browser—our tool focuses on inputs you can actually verify remotely.

How to Test Your PS5 DualSense Controller

Step 1: Connect your DualSense via USB cable (recommended for most reliable readings) or pair via Bluetooth through Windows/macOS Bluetooth settings. Step 2: Press any button on the DualSense to activate browser detection—this one-time security step is required by all browsers before the Gamepad API starts reading input. Step 3: Check the live readouts—watch all 17 button states, left and right analog stick positions (X/Y axes), and L2/R2 trigger pressure values update in real time as you interact with your controller. If stick values drift from zero without touching the sticks, you have confirmed stick drift.

When to Test Your DualSense

Common situations where a PS5 controller test is essential.

Suspected Stick Drift

DualSense is a known high-drift model. If your camera moves on its own in games, use our test to measure exact drift values and confirm the problem before contacting Sony support.

Testing a Used DualSense

Always test a second-hand DualSense before purchasing. Check all buttons, trigger range, and stick drift to avoid buying a faulty controller.

After Stick Module Replacement

Whether you replaced the DualSense Edge's swappable sticks or repaired a standard DualSense, use this test to verify drift is gone and full range is restored.

After a PS5 System Update

Firmware updates occasionally affect controller behavior. Test your DualSense after major PS5 updates to confirm buttons and sticks are responding as expected.

DualSense Glossary

Key terms for understanding your PS5 DualSense controller test results.

Adaptive Triggers
DualSense-exclusive L2/R2 triggers with variable resistance controlled by games and apps. The resistance you feel is a haptic output—it cannot be tested or measured through a browser. Only trigger pressure (0.0?.0) is readable via the Gamepad API.
Haptic Feedback
DualSense's precision vibration system that replaces traditional rumble motors. Like adaptive triggers, haptic output cannot be tested through a browser—our tool only reads input signals from the controller, not outputs sent to it.
Stick Drift
When an analog stick registers movement without being touched. DualSense controllers are a known high-drift model. Our test shows exact X/Y values at rest so you can measure drift severity and decide whether to repair or replace.
DualSense Edge
Sony's pro version of the DualSense with swappable stick modules, back buttons, and adjustable trigger stops. All standard inputs (buttons, sticks, triggers) are testable in our tool; pro features require the PS5 console or Sony's app.
Deadzone
A configurable threshold around the stick center that ignores small inputs. Increasing deadzone can compensate for mild stick drift in-game, but reduces precision. Use our test to measure your drift value and set the minimum deadzone needed.

DualSense Care Tips

Keep your PS5 controller in top condition and extend its lifespan.

Use USB for Drift Testing

USB connection provides more stable and precise stick readings than Bluetooth. For accurate drift diagnosis, always test via USB cable before drawing conclusions.

Check Your Warranty First

Sony has acknowledged DualSense drift issues. In many regions, stick drift is covered under warranty or consumer protection laws. Check PlayStation's support site before spending money on repairs.

Clean the Stick Base Monthly

Dust and debris around the analog stick base accelerate potentiometer wear. Use compressed air to clean around the stick base regularly—this is the most effective prevention for drift.

Update DualSense Firmware

Sony releases firmware updates for DualSense that can improve stick accuracy and Bluetooth stability. Update via PS5 Settings > Accessories > Controllers > Wireless Controller Device Software.
